About Capital One Arena

The arena is home to the AFL's Washington Valor, NBA’s Washington Wizards, the NHL’s Washington Capitals, the WNBA’s Washington Mystics and the NCAA’s Georgetown Hoyas men’s basketball team. 

Boasting an average of 220 events per year, Capital One Arena is the heart of an $9.2 billion redevelopment that began 19 years ago when the arena was built and opened on Dec. 2, 1997. Since then the privately financed arena has hosted 47 million people and more than 3,915 events.

Verizon Center 2014The surrounding neighborhood throughout the years has been rejuvenated by a plethora of restaurants, condominiums and businesses, making the Seventh Street corridor an entertainment destination.

In June 2010,  Ted Leonsis became the majority owner of Capital One Arena and formed Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE). MSE includes ownership of the AFL's Baltimore Brigade and Washington Valor, NBA’s Washington Wizards, the NHL’s Washington Capitals and the WNBA’s Washington Mystics. The company owns and operates Capital One Arena, which is annually ranked as one of the top ranked venues in the world by industry publications Billboard, Pollstar and Venues Today. Monumental Sports & Entertainment also manages Kettler Capitals Iceplex, the training facility for the Washington Capitals, and EagleBank Arena at George Mason University. The District of Columbia and Events DC are building a new sports and entertainment facility in Southeast DC on the St. Elizabeth's East campus. The facility will feature a state-of-the-art training facility for the Washington Wizards and Washington Mystics and will also include a 4,200-seat arena, which will become the new home of the Washington Mystics. The facility is scheduled to open in the fall of 2018. Monumental Sports & Entertainment also co-owns and operates  Monumental Sports Network with NBC Sports Group. Monumental Sports Network is the mid-Atlantic region's top destination for exclusive fan experiences and original sports content across desktop, tablet, mobile and OTT streaming devices.

As an arena in the heart of downtown Washington, D.C., Capital One Arena has hosted a multitude of high-profile events in its history, ranging from the 1998 Stanley Cup Final to the NBA (2001) and WNBA (2002, 2007) All-Star games to the 2003 World Figure Skating Championship, the ACC Tournament (2005, 2016), the first and second rounds of the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament (1998, 2002, 2008) as well as the second and third rounds (2011), the East Regional Round (2006, 2013), the NCAA Frozen Four men’s hockey championship (2009) and the Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament (2017). In 2018 the arena will host the A10 Tournament for the first time and in 2019 the NCAA East Regional for the third time. 

Entertainment at the arena would not be complete without concerts and family shows ranging from all-time greats to current-day chart-topping artists. In the 19-year history of the arena some of the artists who have roamed the halls and mastered the stage at Capital One Arena include: U2, Justin Timberlake, The Three Tenors, Barbra Streisand, Bon Jovi, Prince, Tim McGraw & Faith Hill, Beyonce, the Dalai Lama, Lady Gaga, Keith Urban, Jeff Dunham, Christina Aguilera, Disney on Ice, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, and WWE.

In terms of history, only two events have taken place each of the past 19 years at Capital One Arena as well as each of the past 40+ years dating back to the old Capital Centre arena making them the longest tenured events between both buildings: the Harlem Globetrotters (1973) and the Washington International Horse Show (1975).

Located within the arena are 106 luxury suites, a high-definition center-hung scoreboard, an indoor basketball practice facility and 9 dressing rooms. The arena offers a variety of concession stands and restaurants with menu choices ranging from pizza at Papa John’s to donuts at Dunkin Donuts. Additional arena fare includes hot dogs, cheesesteaks, chicken tender baskets, Chick-Fil-A chicken sandwiches, quesadillas and more. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are also available.

Other amenities in the arena include the Etihad Airways Lounge, the private Owner’s Club, The PwC ClubMaryland Live! Casino Players Club, Budweiser Brew House, Beck's Lounge, The Greene Turtle Sports Bar & Grille and the  Team Store. VIDA Fitness and Bang Salon, McDonald's, Chipotle, Dunkin Donuts and Hertz also have retail locations at the arena.
